This page is for people
who raise fiber animals, or who think they might want to raise
them.
We offer contract processing of your fiber. Your
wish is our command. Please contact us for a quote on your
particular job or to explore the possibilities for adding value
to your fiber.
Small Farm Fibers will buy quality wool in a raw or
professionally scoured state. To potentially be
qualified as a supplier, please give us a call. The
following profile is what we look for in a supplier:
-
A small farm raising
a herd of 30 or more animals, whose fiber is consistent.
This requires keeping animals of the same basic breed, and an
ongoing program of breeding and culling for fiber quality and
consistency. See Evaluate
Fiber Quality.
-
Clean, sound fiber
from healthy animals. This requires hay and
feed handling and pasture grooming practices that prevent excessive
vegetable contamination. It also requires managing
parasite loads and striving for 365 day per year continuous, quality
feed supply.
-
Knowledge,
dedication, and facilities to shear and package wool properly.
The best returns
happen for well-skirted (See How to Skirt
a Fleece), clean, sound fiber. Coarse wool
and mohair, and llama wool with heavy guard hair are less
valuable per pound than fine wool, fine mohair, alpaca, or other
precious fibers.
Qualified fiber
suppliers can become a "Featured Farm". In addition,
if your fiber lends itself to a unique product line, we will
name it after you. |
